The All-Aligned is a digital art project by Uroš Krčadinac. An open source AI system for automated flag design, it visualises the fractal-like fragmentary nature of our digital condition and raises questions about the society where identity creation is mediated by Big Tech.

The software was written in Python (back-end) and JavaScript (front-end). The heart of the software consists of digital systems of statistical distributions for mapping semantics to graphics. Ideas and concepts (pirate, Balkan, libertarian, ecological, dark, etc.) are being mapped onto graphic elements (colors, layouts, symbols, new shapes, etc.).

As an endless ideological machine, the All-Aligned asks three questions:

  1. How do flags work, and how do they fragment us politically?

  2. How do AI algorithms work, and how do they fragment us economically?

  3. How does classic binary logic work, and how does it fragment us existentially?

The algorithm adapts to the individual identity consumer: for one, it will generate a maritime-Balkan-libertarian identity; for another, Slovenian-clerical-vegan; for a third anti-vaxxer-anarcho-Orthodox; for a fourth punk-Vojvodina-Inselian, for a fifth European-new-age-Sumatraist. Identities multiply fractally, ad infinitum, to infinity. Symbol populations multiply like Internet memes or Darwin's finches.

Algorithms are all-aligned, and identities multiply fractally. The flag doubles, once again and again, like a mathematical fractal. Is that the world we live in? Ideology with a joystick. Fractal brands. Fractal profiles. Fractal nations. Fractal individuals.

Katherine Hales asked herself: Are we becoming the codes we type into computers? Boris Buden said: Identity is a bone to gnaw on before they strip you to the bare skin. The poet Rumi sang: No flag. Only love. Only the sail and the wind. But no flag. And Zen poets would add: That which is fluttering, is it a flag or the wind? None: your mind is fluttering.

How do our minds flutter?

Crew

Along with Uroš Krčadinec, Maida Gruden, coordinator of the residency, curator, and editor of the DKSG art program; Andrija Stojanović, producer and project coordinator; Ana Pinter, director and choreographer; Lav Mrenović, curator, and Jelena Pejović, graphic designer, worked on this project — technical and programming support: Miloš Rančić, Jacques Laroche and Antonije Petrović.

The project was started at the international art residency They: live - student lives revealed through context-based artistic practices. The residency was supported by Creative Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia. Later development of the project was supported by Drugo more from Rijeka and Kontejner from Zagreb. The project has so far been exhibited in the DKSG Gallery in Belgrade, the Filodrammatica Gallery in Rijeka, the Miroslav Kraljević Gallery in Zagreb, and the Montenegrin Art Gallery "Miodrag Dado Đurić" in Cetinje, as part of the XI Fluid design forum.

Svesvrstani su digitalno-umjetnički projekat Uroša Krčadinca. Kao AI sistem otvorenog koda za automatizovan dizajn zastava, Svesvrstani vizuelizuju fraktalnu i fragmentarnu prirodu naših digitalnih života i postavljaju pitanja o društvu čije identitete usmjeravaju algoritmi.

Softverski sistem je napisan u Pythonu (back-end) i JavaScriptu (front-end). Srce programa čine sistemi statističkih distribucija za mapiranje semantike na grafiku. Ideje i pojmovi (piratsko, balkansko, libertarijansko, ekološko, inselsko, mračno, ljubavno, itd) mapiraju se na grafičke elemente (boje, layoute, simbole, nove oblike, itd).

Kao beskonačna ideološka mašina, Svesvrstani postavljaju tri pitanja:

  1. Kako zastave rade i kako nas politički fragmentišu?

  2. Kako AI algoritmi rade i kako nas ekonomski fragmentišu?

  3. Kako klasična binarna logika radi i kako nas egzistencijalno fragmentiše?
